How much does it cost to gate check an item on a Continental flight?

I'm going to Florida for a week and was planning on gate checking my guitar in a hard shelled case. I was wondering how much this will cost as I've heard that I probably won't be able to take it as a carry on. There's also no way I'm checking it in with my other luggage, I've heard way too many horror stories D: Anyone know?
